The Virginia State government had this thing called the "Commission on Climate Change" back in 2007 with the Tim Kaine administration. Unfortunately, this is nowinconvenient with Republicans in charge. So they got rid of the website that contained the final report of this commission.
If you want to see this information, you still can. One of the members of the Commission is Skip Stiles, an environmentalist who runs an operation called "Wetlands Watch." The report can now be found on the web at sealevelrisevirginia.net.
The administration of Bob McDonnell, the current Republican Governor of Virginia, disputed the notion that the website removal was intended to silence environmentalists. "It is not right to say that this is not an issue to this administration" said Doug Domenech, the secretary of natural resources. Domenech claimed that the website was killed because relatively few people were reading it.
McDonnell's attitude to global warming is not outright denialism, but mirrors the Bush era viewpoint that humans are incapable of understanding such complex stuff. It is worth mentioning that McDonnell's possible successor, Ken Cuccinelli, is a Tea Party whacko who has argued many times that global warming is indeed a hoax, and who has spent a lot of taxpayer money on a crazy crusade against the climatology researchers at the University of Virginia. So if you think the McDonnell approach to the dangers of sea level rise in coastal Virginia is disappointing, well...
You ain't seen nothing yet.
